The day before our all-day train ride aboard the Potomac Scenic Eagle Railroad, we spent a few hours exploring the town of Romney, West Virginia. Since it was a weekday afternoon, many shops were closed,as many businesses shut their doors by 4 or 5, but we explored what we could! Keep reading for more.
The oldest town in West Virginia
Romney holds the title of being the oldest town in West Virginia, due to its charter being signed first. However, there’s a bit of debate on this. Both Romney and Shepherdstown were chartered on the same day on December 23, 1762. Romney’s charter was signed first by the governor, but some argue Shepherdstown might take the title, as its charter was read for the third time ahead of Romney’s.
For context, the three readings of a bill are part of the legislative process. The first reading introduces the bill, the second allows for amendments, and the third is the final vote for passage. Regardless of the debate, Romney’s charter technically came first.
Exploring Romney
Romney has a welcoming, small-town feel. People were super friendly and most waved and said hello as we explored the area.
Spring Valley Farm Market
Our first stop was at the Spring Valley Farm Market. I highly recommend a stop here! I would love to go again. The market offers a wide selection of local produce, snacks, canned goods, desserts, and condiments. If you visit in the spring, definitely visit for their fresh peaches. Most of the goods come from the family farm in nearby Augusta, WV, and the market also has locations in Martinsburg and Winchester, VA. On weekends, they even set up shop at farmers markets in and around the DC metro area. We grabbed a pepperoni roll (obviously!), kettle corn, a spiced cake dessert, and pickle-flavored Virginia peanuts. Everything we purchased (including the peanuts) was great.
From there, we headed into the downtown area.
Anderson’s Corner
Next, we visited Anderson’s Corner, a shop that specializes in fine jewelry, including diamonds, gemstones (including tanzanite!), and antique pieces. Though it looks small from the outside, the inside is full of options, especially if you’re into vintage jewelry. There’s also a nice selection of pottery, home goods, and wines, with wine tastings available.
The Country Store on Main (formerly Dillon’s Country Treasures)
This is a charming home goods shop that has a selection of West Virginia-made items, from clothing and seasonal decorations to a large selection of candles. We picked up a fun sign for a family member and some West Virginia-themed stickers.
Main Street Grill
Not located directly downtown, Main Street Grill is still worth the short drive. We headed here for dinner after exploring the downtown area. The menu is vast, so there are options for everyone, but note that they don’t serve alcohol. We had fried pickles, hand-breaded chicken tenders with fries and a side salad, and a reuben with fries. The portions were large, so come hungry! We would dine here again.

- Rt.50 Biscuits & Burgers: A great casual spot for biscuits and gravy, burgers, and other homestyle favorites
- El Centro Pizzeria Family Restaurant: A local spot serving Mexican food and Pizza
- Hanging Rocks Ice Cream: This popular local ice cream shop also offers public access to the Potomac River. This would be a great spot to finish kayaking trips
Outdoor adventures near Romney
South Branch Potomac River
The South Branch of the Potomac is one of the most scenic stretches of the Potomac River. It’s perfect for kayaking, picnicking, and swimming. You’re likely to spot wildlife like Bald Eagles, herons, wild turkeys, and beavers. The river offers a range of paddle lengths, from a 17-mile stretch that takes most of the day, to shorter 5- or 9-mile options. You might hit a few rapids during the float so it’s important to wear a personal floatation device (mandatory for each individual to have their own).
Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad
The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad is a heritage railroad that operates excursion trains over a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line that runs between Green Spring and Petersburg. There are a variety of excursions available, but you can read about our all-day Petersburg trip here.
George Washington National Forest
About an hour away, this national forest offers several outdoor adventures. A favorite hike is Big Schloss, a 4.4-mile trail that leads to a 360-degree panoramic view. For something less crowded, try Tibbet Knob, which offers similar great views and a couple of rock scrambles.
Blackwater Falls State Park
About an hour away, Blackwater Falls State Park is famous for its stunning 62-foot waterfall. The park is a great destination for hiking, picnicking, and scenic views of the Blackwater River.
Final thoughts
Romney may be small, but it’s filled with history and charm. I think most of Romney proper can be seen within a day, but would be a great jumping off point for many of the excursions outlined above.
