It’s been awhile because I have been focused on other areas of my life, but now that that’s over, I can try and pick back up my weekly (or bi-weekly?? 🤔) writing. Here goes. This one is a short one.
A friend texted the New York Times Creativity challenge article to read, and the tag line was “Want to feel happier, lighter, less stuck? Try these fun daily activities.” Needless to say, I was intrigued! I followed the first few days. Day 1 was doodling, and Day 2 was Poetry.
Reading poetry has never really been my thing (I could make an exception for poet Nayyirah Waheed), and thinking of myself writing poems seemed silly. BUT, I wanted to follow the process.
Surprisingly, I got really into it. I don’t know if I’ll continue to spend the time to write, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Maybe with time, it will help me become more creative. Here are my first poems.
Hungry
Night falls
Sleep and seek-
Does my cup runneth over?
No.
The same.
The moon inches across
The sky.
Sunshine must wait.
A creak on the stairs.
What inspired this: This was my very first poem for the challenge. I randomly chose the topic of my cat waiting for more food at night, and hearing me creak down the stairs around 4:30 each morning to feed her before heading to the gym.
Bermuda Triangle
Bermuda Triangle
The pyramids
Nothing compares to the shape
of this extremity
that carries you everywhere.
Dying blades of grass
spring from
the knuckle-like joints.
They carried you
to me
and I love
every part of
you.
What inspired this: My husband’s really deformed feet/bunion toes.
Gone Boating, Be Back Soon
The sound of the waves.
They rock me.
This water-
extends forever.
Eyes closed.
Sunlight warms my face.
A deep breath.
I am at peace.
I have loved you
endlessly.
I am loved
tremendously.
It moves me
I hope you know
I am content.
What inspired this: Thinking of my late father-in-law who loved boating, and who loved us.
Use the Force
A deep breath
A long exhale.
Woodsy.
Earthy.
With a hint of resin.
A grounding force
to relieve stress
and relax.
What if
Darth Vader
had a mask full of cedarwood
and was just trying
to relax?
What inspired this: I have a small vase of cedarwood pieces to smell from time to time. As I was smelling them one time, I thought of how heavy Darth Vader breathed.
Into Forever
A bringing together
And end of searching
Dozens of hearts
Beat in unison
As if to shout
We love you
You deserve this
This is meant to be
The shouts fill the room
And echo through every corner
Carrying them
into forever.
What inspired this: Watching one of my good friends get married to her forever person in a beautiful church. I was inspired by the room itself and the people witnessing their love.
